As trade between nations and continents increased, so did the amount of and size of the ships required for this industry. One of the most important faces of this new age was the clipper ship, a larger ship featuring many sails designed for shipping cargo and sailing fast. These were used almost exclusively as commercial vessels.

The clipper went through several design changes as time went on, such as the “extreme clipper”, which sacrificed some of its cargo space in exchange for higher speeds, but the central design remained the same as the clipper dominated the freight scene for many years.
