On the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, gay people came together in New York City for The Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day March. The march went from Greenwich Village to Central Park, with a few thousand gay activists attending. The picture shows transgender activists Marsha P. Johnson on the left and Sylvia Rivera holding a sign. Before the parade, there were self-defense classes for people to learn how to protect themselves, as they did not have a police permit for the parade and did not know what they would face. This was the start to many pride parades and eventually evolved into the NYC Pride Parade we know today.
