This painting is portraying a part of Midsummer Night’s Dream in which the beautiful Queen Tatiana being cursed to fall in love with a man with a donkey’s head named Bottom. This was a crucial part in the play, as it was a cruel trick performed by Puck and King Oberion to make a fool of Tatiana. Landseer was famous for his animal paintings, but this was his only painting depicting fairies along with animals. The painting was created from 1848 to 1851 and includes vibrant colors and touches of realism. The scene almost looks like a dream sequence, only strengthened by the whimsical appearance of the fairies.
